Amsterdam Centraal — Arrival by Water

November 1631. The barge shuddered against the wooden jetty roughly here — before this station, before the island it squats on. I stepped off with one chest of copper plates and a rumor of talent. The stink hit first: tar, rotting fish, horse sweat from the carters. A customs man poked my plates. "A painter?" I said yes. He laughed. "This city buys rumors — if you can paint them true." I was watching a herring-seller gut fish, her knife a flicker. That was Amsterdam: speed, stink, money. I had left Leiden with my mother's blessing and a debt for the copper. Leiden was quiet — canals, books, the smell of cloth. Amsterdam was a wound. Every street a market, every face a customer or a thief. I took one room near Sint Anthonisbreestraat, a window facing north for the light. The landlord wanted a month's rent in advance. I painted his wife in three hours. He forgot the rent. In 1634 they made me a citizen — the right to buy a house, join the guild, sue a man who would not pay. But money was never the thing. The thing was to see clearly. Walk with me and count what this city counts: guilders, herring, sins. I will show you what it cost me to see. Turn your back to the station. You're facing the Zeedijk — the sailors' quarter. I walked this street my first week in Amsterdam, looking for lodgings and subject matter. The smell was the first thing: tar from the shipyards, herring brine from the barrels stacked outside every tavern, and something else — spice, maybe, or sweat from men who'd been at sea for months. A woman called out to me in Dutch I barely understood. A man in a wool cap was selling eels from a bucket. Another man, English by his coat, was arguing with a whore about a debt. I stood at the corner, holding my chest of plates, and I thought: I could paint this. Every face here is a story. Every story is a sale. But the Zeedijk taught me something no academy ever could. It taught me that a man's face is never just a face — it's a map of what he's lost. And what he's lost is what he'll pay to see. Walk into the Zeedijk now. The street narrows. The buildings lean toward each other like drunks. In my time, this was the roughest street in the city. A man could lose his purse, his life, or his soul here before he'd walked a hundred paces. And I learned more about painting in one afternoon on this street than in five years of drawing plaster casts. Because here, nobody poses. They just are.
