Napoleon's Paris: The Anchor of the Étoile

Limestone dust coats the velvet collar of my riding coat, carrying the sharp, chalky scent of fractured earth.

Narrated in first person by Napoleon Bonaparte: the Paris he cut from limestone and bronze — from the foundations of the Arc de Triomphe to his tomb beneath the golden dome.

Limestone dust coats the velvet collar of my riding coat, carrying the sharp, chalky scent of fractured earth. The air at the peak of the Colline de Chaillot rings with a deafening rhythm—iron striking iron, heavy mallets driving steel chisels into raw, white blocks newly dragged from the deep quarries. I rub a pinch of the pale grit between my thumb and forefinger. It is cold, coarse, and immensely heavy. The vastness of the Étoile spreads out around me, a blank canvas of mud and crushed gravel waiting to be perfectly aligned with the Tuileries far in the distance. This monument is a great limestone anchor plunged into the Parisian soil, tethering the fleeting winds of my army's conquests to the bedrock of France. They promised me the bright sun of Austerlitz, but today the sky over the Champs-Élysées is a pale, infinite gray. It matters little. The wooden scaffolding already rises like a skeletal cathedral, stretching higher than the surrounding elm trees. I tilt my head back, my bicorne slipping slightly, to trace the vertical lines of thick pine poles disappearing into the low clouds. My neck aches fiercely from the steep angle, yet I cannot bring myself to lower my gaze. The men of the Grande Armée deserve more than simple bronze medals that tarnish in dark wooden drawers. They bled in the relentless rain at Ulm, they marched through the clinging mud of Marengo, and they shattered the ice on the frozen lakes of Pratzen. I promised them they would return home to walk beneath arches of triumph. Now, I stand at the very edge of the excavation and watch those foundations being sunk into the earth. Fifty feet deep, the trenches gape like man-made canyons. Laborers the size of insects haul braided hemp ropes thick as a cannon's barrel, lifting ashlar blocks that weigh more than a fully loaded field artillery piece. My chest expands, drawing in the cold wind that whips down the broad, unfinished avenue. When finished, this edifice will swallow the afternoon light. An entire cavalry regiment could ride through its central portal with their lances raised high and never once graze the vaulted ceiling. I step closer to the precipice of the pit. The damp ground physically vibrates beneath the leather soles of my boots with the drop of every massive cornerstone. The shockwaves travel up my legs. Centuries from now, long after the flesh of my old grognards has returned to the soil, these immense pillars will remain standing. The masons will carve their names into the inner walls. I close my eyes and listen to the cacophony of the hammers echoing across the hill. Each strike is a heartbeat, a fraction of a second of eternity being captured in the dust. The sheer audacity of the scale makes the fine hairs on my arms stand upright against the cold fabric of my sleeve. We are not just erecting an arch; we are carving a mountain to match the Alps we conquered. The wind shifts, blowing a thick cloud of white powder across the site. It settles on my shoulders like the first snows of a winter campaign. I do not brush it away. I stand perfectly still, staring upward, entirely consumed by the colossal shadow of what is yet to come.
